You will find strong dramatic atmospheres, keyboard features and fast pace beats. This type of music has a heavy characteristic of mythology and fantasy. Heavy metal has also had a satanic feel about them, but Viking metal has nothing to do with Satanism. People will get this idea because of the hateful and melodies feel of the songs. Most songs are about Viking warriors or epic battles.

In countries like Finland and Norway, Viking metal has strong roots. Viking metal incorporates instruments like the accordion, panflute and harp into their music. Viking metal likes to use deep growls and roars in their vocals to give the Viking sound a more metal atmosphere. Viking metal uses these techniques to give their music a evil and dark feeling behind them. These types of techniques are found in Black metal, where most Viking metal bands start.

Most Viking metal reflects on battles of warfare. The earliest signs of Viking metal were Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin wrote songs that includes some gods and famous Vikings. Also Black Sabbath had songs containing choir vocals that became prominent in Viking metal"s style. Yngwie J. Malmsteen was the first metal band to use all Viking metal elements. "I am a Viking" was release by Yngwie J. Malmsteen in 1985, the next trace of a full Viking metal song. The first band to make a full album and become one of the first Viking heavy metal bands was called Bathory. In 1988 "Blood Fire Death" became a black metal album with a Viking atmosphere. Further on they released an album called "Hammerheart" which had a Viking metal style with the incorporation of folk instruments. This is one of their most popular ablums to this day

The pagan culture is referenced in Viking metal. Viking metal bands usually are formed in northern Europe. Countries in northern Europe have most Viking metal bands. Viking metal references a lot of Black metal. You will find that Viking metal tries to go for an epic, dramatic and mythological style of music. You will find other metal elements like Traditional and Folk. With English being a prominent language in European countries, most Viking metal bands will choose this to be their prominent language in their music.

Here is a list of some of the most prominent bands in Viking metal. As you have read, most of these bands have a different musical background than Viking metal. Equilibrium, Bathory, Amon Amarth, Vanaheim, Ensiferum, Manowar and Enslaved.

Viking metal isn't less popuiar than some other genres, but it has been around for 20 years. Viking metal is a very underground heavy metal genre. Bands like Ensiferum, Enslaved, Amon Amarth and Bathory have continued to create albums. Some of these bands listed have created a strong community and fan base. Bands will continue to create great albums and others will join the genre in hopes that it will become more mainstream in the metal community.

Power Metal belongs in the top genres for metal music. Power metal has heavy metal features, but more speed like today's metal. Speed metal was really the start of power metal in America. There was a group of metal music bands that was on their way to create something new within the metal world. With an increase of harmonies and less distortion, this opened the door for others to play with it.

Different Factors of Power Metal

Growling and clean vocals are a common feature in power metal. These growls or screams are similar to what you should find in black metal or death metal. There happen to be a hand full of vocalists which have alter the way power metal is today. Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) and Ronnie James Dio (Dio) are probably the most prominent power metal vocalists. But bands started to try out more singing and higher notes within their music. This style really took a hold on some singers like Timo Kotipelto (Stratovarius), Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween), Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear) and Michele Luppi (Vision Divine).

Fantasy and mythology are popular lyrics and song meanings in power metal. But there will always be bands to sing about politics and religion. Most bands that do incorporate this still included a fictional idea or feeling with it. Bands that followed this trend were Symphony X, 3 Inches of Blood, Hammer Fall and DragonForce. Band also singed about hope and positive things like Gamma Ray, Helloween and Lost Horizon. Artists like Firewind, Manowar, Sabaton and Iced Earth sang with a dark perspective on their lyrics.

Instrument Style of Power Metal

Power metal bands stay with the basics with guitars, bass, drums plus some elements of keyboards. Power metal usually uses a slower pace for their chord progression than other metal music. Just about all power metal songs you can find a fast guitar solo in the mix. With a bass guitar smacking some notes which are usually lost in the electric guitars.

Double bass pedal or dual bass drums are the most common elements for drummers in Power Metal. Double bass is a very common trait for metal music. Either playing the double bass for a continuous amount of time or give rapid bursts in rhythm. This heavy metal type of drumming have been used in all genres of metal music.

This type of metal music genre has been known to use keyboards within their music. Bands such as Nightwish and Rhapsody use keyboards to improve their sound. There's various ways that most power metal bands work with a keyboard. One is to have a complete melody and another is to insert quick accents into their music.

Other Aspects of Metal Music

With thrash metal, heavy metal and speed metal being a big part of the metal community in the United States. They began to experiment and expand on where they could go. American power metal is a faster and is more similar to heavy metal than what was evolving with European power metal. Another difference you might find is the style of music and also the tone of the distortion. American power metal has had higher vocal singers and more distortion within the sound of their music. For additional American Power Metal consider Iced Earth,Manowar and Savatage.

Most European Metal has more of a melodic sound for their metal music. Folk metal is a very popular in European countries and have been a large part of impact in metal music. European power metal uses fast palm mutes, clean vocals and a less distortion guitar. For the metal European community, power metal stands on top for one of the most popular. Bands like Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius and Helloween are in the top end for European power metal.

Usually keeping the deep death growl vocals in their music, bands like Circle of Death Children, Brujeria and Cephalic Carnage are keeping it alive.

Deathcore

Death core is very similar to deathgrind but more elements of death metal. The style has fast drumming, guitars and growled vocals. Job for a Cowboy, Salt the Wound and Suicide Silence continue to grow this genre of death metal music.

Whats Next for Death Metal

With death metal branching out and being more and more popular into the 2000s and with society changing their views on metal music, you will be seeing more death metal emerge. More subgenres will expand and more bands will fall into this category.

Nu Metal is a sub category of the heavy metal music genre. Nu Metal will blend style and elements from Grunge, Punk and Hip Hop into their music. Band in nu metal mostly used aggressive vocals and melodic singing in their metal music.

The term "nu metal" was introduced in Spin magazine as the "new metal." The "new metal" term was changed to "nu metal" after time pressed on and it was featured in the movie"Get Thrashed." Nu metal music genre was started in the 90's and rising to its peak in the start of the year 2000.

Korn's third album "Follow the Leader" which sold for 9 million copies across the globe gave the nu metal community a boost in popularity. With Korn leading the way for the nu metal community, other bands come out to the public.

The nu metal bands popularity grew and so did the community. With Korn's "Follow the Leader" album being so successful, Coal Chamber, Staind and Limp Bizkit started growing in the nu metal music community. Coal Chamber, Spineshank and Static-X all came from Los Angeles, California. Bands like Godsmack, Soufly, Distrubed, Limp Bizkit, Sevendust and Slipknot starting making an impact on the nu metal community. All of these bands have had the opportunity to play in huge metal tours like Family Values Tour, Lollapalooza, Ozzfest. The biggest tour for the nu metal bands was the 30th anniversary of Woodstock.

The nu metal genre grew with a wider number of bands as time went on. Band releasing albums that went platinum were starting to become more regular for nu metal bands like System of a Down, Papa Roach, P.O.D and Linkin Park. In 2001 nu metal was considered to be the most popular metal music in American, this was nu metal highest peak. Nu metal bands were getting signed with most record labels during this time. With nu metal bands getting signed easily, this brought bad quality to the community.

Into the early years of 2000 nu metal's popularity died down and bands that started the wave wasn't selling their new albums as well as their previous ones. With the metal community losing interest in nu metal, they moved on to the new generation of metal music. Most nu metal bands are still playing a similar style of music and staying in the genre, others have moved on.

From the roots of old school thrash metal, this misunderstood music genre of metal music is know as Black Metal. Black Metal has been an exit to disillusioned youth searching for a way out of internal conflicts with personal, religious or cultures differences. There will always be that disaproval of their metal music. Within the scene a little subset of its listeners has aligned themselves with National Socialism and practiced crimes such as murder and church burnings (it has been said the number could be as high as 50 or more churches).

Differences in Black Metal Beliefs

The most reconizable Black Metal group is VargVikernes and Mayhem. The year 93 Vikernes was involved in the homicide of owner of label Deathlike Silence Øystein Aarseth and was found guilty. Vikernes just showed the black metal community a reflection of how an impact of anti-religious can be. In Black Metal you will find many conflicts, thoughts and beliefs, as you would find in any other culture..

Variants in Black Metal Music

Bathory and Cruachan, a Viking lore and mythology band, pioneered out to the metal community and made a big affect for black metal. These "folk" and "viking" metal bands use more traditional folk instruments to compliment the frequent eltectric guitar, drums and bass rather than the typical norms and opts. Ambient, symphonic and doom metal have been know as other versions of typical black metal. Fruther sounds have included old 80's punk movement (also know as crust), gothic and even some industrial have influenced some black metal bands.

The Last Impression

Black metal will continue to develop as long as there are fans and a world to express themselves, for the band and for the fans. Glamorized or demonized black metal has had a existing effect on the metal music genre for indivdualism. From bands such as Venom and Celtic Frost to the present and the far future being pushed from behind bands will experiment and proceed to shock and keep black metal alive.

This subgenre of heavy metal music has been known as "prog" metal or in other words progressive metal. This metal genre of music has both elements from progressive rock and jazz. This music has elements from metal like complex structures and guitar distortions which you can see in heavy metal. Most progressive metal bands were from a jazz or classical background. These two types of genres have been known to start the revolution of progressive metal. Progressive metal less popular than the others in the metal community. But with more bands creating more progressive style of music, this could push it into mainstream.

The Start of Progressive Metal

This metal genre traces back to the 60's and 70's. A band named High Tide started to uses some elements from these other genres of music in their metal music. Other bands started to follow the trend. Rush and King Crimson was another band to take some of the features of other music genres and mix them. With these bands scratching the surface, there was really only three bands that took progressive metal to the next level. Fates Warning, Queensryche and Dream Theater all had their own ideas and inspiration for progressive metal These three bands really had some progressive rock influences that gave them a more edgy and extreme metal sound.

One Hit Solved it All

Progressive metal started to breakout in the community in the early 1990s. When there was a release from Queensryche called Silent Lucidity that became very popular on MTV and on the radio. This song really helped other progressive metal bands get noticed and out to the public. With the road paved now bands like Ayreon, Symphony X, Opeth, Threshold, Pain of Salvation and Tool now were getting more publicity. Each had their own distinct sounds and elements to keep progressive metal evolving.

New Bands Merge Up

With time moving forward so did the style and techniques of progressive metal. The new bands in progressive metal Dark Suns, Conscience and Disillusion were became the new leaders of this metal genre. Most progressive metal bands have always looked up to Green Carnation, Anathema, Opeth, Tool and Pain of Salvation.

Classical, Rock, Jazz and Metal Needs some Progressive

With some heavy metal, elements of rock, jazz and classical music will give you the building block of progressive metal. There are even more metal genres within this metal genre. The most popular bands in progressive metal are Opeth and King's X. These two bands could even be considered to be progressive death metal bands. There is also traditional progressive metal, like Symphony X, Devin Townsend and Shadown Gallery. There is a genre called jazz / fusion death metal where bands like Between the Buried and Me, Pestilence and Meshuggah have made it famous.

What's Next for Progressive Metal?

Progressive metal will continue to grow and become more advanced. New bands will continue to be featured, bring something new to the table for progressive metal. Most of this genre has been influenced by classical, thrash, jazz and its own music, but it will continue to emerge and change as time goes on. The metal community will also have progressive metal, giving the community some type of new and exciting genre of music.

The Beginning of Thrash Metal

Thrash metal is another branch off the tree in metal music. Thrash metal is more fat riffs, drum beats and rage. Having fast guitars, lots of distortion and loud singing is included in this genre. "The Big Four" created the thrash metal genre and the structure for thrash metal. "The Big Four" include Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer, these are the pioneers of thrash metal. These four bands are the creators of thrash metal music which was created in the late 1970's to early 1980's.

At the late 1970's and early 1980's, there was a huge wave of British heavy metal music was circling. Expanding from punk rock and hardcore metal, thrash metal found its own style and technique. Putting together more complex and long guitar solos, adding some deep distortion, double rick bass drums and aggressive vocals is thrash metal.

Using complex and fast solos, long intros and pulling out long outros is common principle in thrash metal. Shredding was one technique these bands would use when playing complex quick speed solos. Shredding is a way to play notes quickly during your solos. Using techniques like hammer-ons and pull-offs. For the metal community and having these new styles being played was a great movement for the typical styles.

After the release of Slayer's "Haunting the Chapel", Anthrax's "Fistful of Metal", Overkill's "Self Titled" and Metallica's "Ride the Lighting" albums were released in 1984, broke open thrash metal. Each of these bands brought something different to the table of being the heaviest and fastest in thrash metal. This began a new world in the metal community and opened the doors as a recognizable metal genre.

Through a couple of decades and into the 90's there was a small change in the music and in the bands. With bands changing their style of thrash metal and new age bands coming in, there was a change in thrash metal. With band changing their style to more of a hard rock this changed fans perspective. Metallica's "Load" and "Reload" albums fit into this category. Not only did Metallica take a different route with their music, so did Megadeth. Megadeth's album "Countdown to Extinction" was a different style than their earlier releases.

Into to the year 2000 thrash metal has become very low in popularity. There are current bands that fit into this genre of metal music, Evile, Municipal Waste and Gama Bomb. Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax still release new albums and still tour around the world, just a little different than what they were in the 70's and 80's. Thrash metal will always be a recognizable metal genre because of what it changed in music. The fast riffs, solos and techniques used in thrash metal are being used today in all metal genres.

Folk Metal Community

Folk Metal has been around sense the 1990's. The earliest band that created this genre of music had to be Skyclad. They had an offshoot of heavy metal that included folkish instruments and folk singing. This genre of metal music has began to go mainstream and approach the marketing. More and more bands and styles are generating more folk metal. Europe is very popular with folk metal music bands, probably because of the style, history and inspiration that the region reflects. Romanticism and pagan beliefs are some of the more popular structures of folk metal music.

Like all other metal genres, there are always subgenres included. Some of the more popular ones that fall into folk metal are Oriental metal, Celtic metal and Viking metal. There is always the question who started folk metal. Most people say Cruachan started Celtic metal which was just the guitarist expressing interest in traditional black metal with a folk metal style. Primordial and Waylander help make the transition to folk metal.

Orphaned Land started making Arabic and Jewish style of folk music. This brought some media attention to the folk metal community in the early 90's. What they created at this time was later called Oriental metal, and through time has grew to incorporate many bands and styles all distinctively drawing inspiration from the Middle East.

In the early 1990's a Swedish band named Bathory started pioneering with flutes, clean vocals with some death metal growls into their music. This was the start of the genre Viking metal. Named after the infamous Hungarian countess, Bathory set the standard for all Viking metal to follow. Powerful ballads are combined with paganism and mythology in Viking metal. There are other bands that have taken this Viking metal style and put to death metal. Amon Amarth is one band that has death metal music with Viking themed lyrics. Bands are always trying to go beyond and above what the others are doing. Ensiferium is one of those bands and are probably considered to be at the top of the genre.

Masculinity and Nationalism are prideful in Folk metal. There are some Nationalism Socialism Black Metal bands that are not usually accepted by the fan base that hold a racist feature. This has had an impact on other bands to the point where they had to publicly denounce racism to the public.

Folk metal has really inspired a bunch of die-hard fans with many festivals dedicated to the genre. Notably Paganfest, Heathen Fest and Noctis Valkyries Metal Festival. As time goes on and the genre expands these tours and festivals have made their way from the cold northern lands from whence they came across the sea to the States.

Folk for the future has been known to be a 'passing fad', but not likely. For those that truly understand and appreciate the sometimes esoteric nature of the music, it will inevitably prove to have staying power, and with each generation of fans and musicians passed it will continue to venture into unknown realms with endless possibilities. Folk metal is for casual metal listeners that have monotony breakdowns and chugs to influence today's metal fans.
